Modernizing critical infrastructure without disrupting operations

Zakład Wodociągów i Kanalizacji (ZWiK) in Grodzisk Mazowiecki, Poland, provides essential water and wastewater services across four municipalities. Its infrastructure supports a large service area, with extensive water distribution and sewer networks that require continuous oversight.

ZWiK had relied on Proficy technology for years to monitor and manage its water infrastructure. As operational requirements evolved, the utility needed to update its existing SCADA environment while preserving the complex applications, configurations, and integrations already supporting daily operations.

Unlike many traditional IT upgrades, modernization of a water utility's SCADA environment cannot involve extended downtime. Interruptions to monitoring and control capabilities can introduce operational risks, making continuity a primary consideration throughout the project.

Working with VIX Automation, ZWiK established several priorities:

  • Strengthen reliability and scalability for future expansion
  • Improve access to process information, alarms, and events
  • Increase engineering independence for internal teams
  • Advance cybersecurity readiness, including the EU's NIS2 Directive

Proficy iFIX and Proficy Historian

With implementation led by VIX Automation, ZWiK modernized its SCADA and industrial data management environment using two solutions from Velotic's Proficy portfolio.

Proficy iFIX

Provides real-time visualization, monitoring, and supervisory control capabilities for industrial operations. For ZWiK, the upgraded environment supports more consistent operator interfaces, improved system management, and a flexible client-server architecture.

Provides centralized collection, storage, and access to industrial process data. The modernized environment supports historical analysis, reliable data archiving, and reporting through Microsoft Excel and HTML-based outputs.

A planned migration

A carefully planned migration led by VIX Automation

Rather than making changes directly to the live operational environment, VIX Automation prepared and tested the updated system in separate environments before deployment. The implementation migrated servers, client applications, system logic, configurations, databases, alarms, visualization screens, and communication drivers to updated Proficy software versions.

VIX Automation also reorganized the client-server architecture, standardized operator interfaces, and expanded reporting through Excel integration and HTML reporting. A dedicated engineering development workstation and hands-on training in Proficy Historian helped ZWiK take greater ownership of its environment.

Enrollment in the Proficy Acceleration Plan gives ZWiK continued access to software releases, security updates, and vendor support.
